People say that what we are all seeking is a meaning for life. I don’t think this is what we’re really seeking. I think what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive.
We decided to unschool in spring 2007. But I didn't *get it* until I read this book in December. In some ways, unschooling seems like such a logical extension of attachment parenting, allowing our children to be themselves and helping fulfill their needs.
This book made me look at everything differently. I realized that I was more controlling than I had thought. M is a very emotional, intense, amazing kid and by shifting my attitude - and really, learning to let go - our relationship has been strengthened.
I attribute the shift in me completely to Ms. Kream and her wonderful book. It is easily the most inspiring thing I have ever read, and her responses to the many questions make for wonderful reading. Since most of them are just 1-2 pages long, it's an easy read for the busy parent, or a great way to start the day with a quick bit of inspiration. This is one book that every unschooler should read at least once.
Before I read this book, I didn't quite get that unschooling IS LIFE!!!
The first time that I read it, I remember thinking, "well, I do *not* agree with a lot of that!" After reading it, I was looking at everything differently, though. I read it again a few months later, and realized that, "I DO agree with almost all of what she wrote."
I don't argue about screen time, I don't *make* my kids brush their teeth, we have very few house rules. This book truely brought us from "unschoolers" to "radical unschoolers".
