In the end, the secret to learning is so simple: Think only about whatever you love. Follow it, do it, dream about it...and it will hit you: learning was there all the time, happening by itself.

A great book for the budding artist
By ArpMy son is REALLY anal-retentive. He used to get frustrated when drawing because he wanted his drawings to be so realistic, and it took some time to convince him that every draws differently and that things don't have to be perfect.
Two years ago we got Ed Emberley's Thumbprint book, which has a lot of fun drawing ideas, all based around embellishing thumbprints with eyes, legs, etc. M really enjoyed that, and moved on to drawing circles and ovals instead of thumbprints to speed up the process (and fulfill his neat needs).
A thought he might be ready for some more ideas, so a couple of weeks ago I got this book, and he has LOVED it. I wish I had it as a kid - I drew tons and would get frustrated when trying to draw more complicated items. This book makes a lot of things easy to draw by using basic shapes and lines.
I would highly recommend it as a source of inspiration as well, since it covers a lot of ground - there are ideas for animals, houses, boats, trees, machines and on and on. M has really enjoyed it, and it has kicked off some really cool ideas. I'm well convinced that it has allowed him to let go a bit of his perfection and to have fun with drawing.
