My best and worst jobs...

Inspired by Arp's blog entry, I've been thinking a lot lately about my best and worst jobs...

WORST:  I worked in telemarketing for about two days....that stunk.  I had a huge problem with harassing people.  I made one "sale" and I quit later that day.  Yuck.  I worked in the dining hall in college, serving food...I was NOT fond of that one.  I worked overnights ALONE at a convenience store...I did not feel safe at that job.

BEST:  Camp counselor at the American Diabetes Association's Camp Carefree in NH for four summers...that was cool.  I met some really super people.  I worked in the dining hall in college, in the dish room...I LOVED that!  Yes, it was super messy, but there was no responsibility, and we blasted music and had fun.  I worked at a grocery store for a while, and I loved the cashiering and bagging parts of it...again, it was mindless, but not...like, I would figure out people's change before the cash register did (this was when a lot of people paid in cash), I considered bagging groceries like my own personal game of Tetris (I was one of those people who would bag in PAPER unless you begged me for PLASTIC...).

I used to work with people with Developmental Disabilities for a few years.  I enjoyed it at the time, but I think I might not like it now.  Now that I believe more in leaving people alone, I'd have a hard time "encouraging" people to follow schedules and whatever learning objective had been set by someone for them.  The job always talked about human rights and all that...and I believed at the time that I honored those rights...but now, I'm not sure.  I don't think the system was set up to honor their rights at all.

And, of course...being a mom is the best and worst job that I've ever had.  The good times are awesome and prevalent.  The worst parts would include the cracked nipples (with thrush), the PPD, the nights of vomit marathons...rare, but they are there.  Overall, the best "job", though!

ah telemarketing...

By Arp

That was one of my part-time college jobs.  It was really lame to, trying to get people to switch oil companies when the competitor offered free security systems.  Not surprisingly, no one wanted to switch. Meh.

I also worked in the dining hall at school (different time & school) and that was not too bad.  Some of the best wages on campus + free food.  And trying samurai sword tricks with fruit.

Neither was particularly meaningful or fulfilling.  I'm really hoping my kids don't need to get a job for money.  I'd rather pay them to intern or volunteer somewhere than waste time in pointless job.
