I never let my schooling interfere with my education.
I am a bit confused in a few areas...I'll start with this...
I haven't spent a huge amount of time on here yet, but I have looked around. Is this like a community blog that we all participate in; or more like a group that we belong to and can have our own blog extending from it that other group members can read? I'm just a little confused as to what we're doing.

It's a little bit of both
By ArpWhat you see on this site's home page is anything that is either a public blog entry, a public group entry (ie in a group but not limited to group members) or a group entry in a group that you are a member of.
Basically - what someone sees on the home page will be different from what someone else sees. If you logout, you'll see that some the BetaGroup posts won't be visible while public blog entries will.
It's a bit abstract, but makes things really flexible. Every member has a blog by default. This default blog is public. If you want a blog that is visible only to specific people, you can create a group, make it private and extend memberships to people of your choice.
A group can also be like a community blog - for example, I started a group for Unschooling Dads, and whoever joins will be able to make a group entry (like a blog entry, but specific to the group).
I spent some time thinking about how rigid or flexible things should be. I decided to make things flexible and see how people did things. This is where the feedback comes in - if 9/10 people find something confusing, it should be probably be fixed or removed.
I'm glad that I'm getting some good 'how & why' type questions. Hopefully in a couple of weeks, we can work together to refine the organization and user experience and open up the site.
So...
By TraceyOn *my* "home" page, I will only see posts that are public or that are posted in the groups that I belong to? Or, will I still need to go the my group to see what's been posted there? Also, is there a spot to click that will just show me all posts (general or from my groups) that are new, that I haven't yet read?

All stuff for your eyes
By ArpYou'll see anything that's public and anything that is in one of your groups.
You can see all unread stuff from your groups from either the black nav bar (groups->my group activity) or from 'My Unread' in your control panel (ie the 'my control panel' link in the black nav bar).
Also in your control panel is 'My Subscriptions,' which is anything you have subscribed to. When you edit your account, you can choose to 'Autosubscribe' so that you are automatically subscribed anytime you write an entry/topic or respond to an entry/topic. You can also access everything you're subscribed to from the Subscriptions tab of your account page.
